AFTERGLOW Overflow networking and discussion time until noon following the session.

Knowledge of how to implement green stormwater infrastructure is rapidly evolving. This session is part 2 of a three-part series.

In this session we will get the juices flowing with presentations from Edmonton and Calgary on construction issues and processes. Panelists will then discuss their perspectives, lessons learned and successes. Topics anticipated to be covered include:

  • Construction Testing – appropriate methods – compaction and bulk density? Water application testing? Nature and timing of testing?
  • Cost management/efficiencies – Alberta is said to be more expensive than Ontario – if so, why?
  • Supply issues? How can we bring costs down?
  • Coordination and Communication – informal (emails) vs. formal (site instructions) –
  • recommended record keeping
  • Construction delays and scheduling – causes, sequencing of work, how to make things move more smoothly and faster?
  • Roles and responsibilities, especially in case of split scopes
  • Standardized cleanouts and barrels, curb cut inlets – have these helped?
  • Tender timelines
  • End of season work
  • Preparation of as-built and as-landscaped drawings

Panelists will then take the discussion of pathways forward with these topics:

  • How to reduce delays
  • Inlet design/ standardization – what else could be standardized?
  • Design and construction standards
  • Plant Material Selection – what types of plants are doing well/not doing well? – robust plant list – how to deal with substitutions?
  • Plugs vs pots: How to source large quantities of plants – especially with quick project turnaround
  • Resilient Landscaping
  • Cost efficiency
  • Construction efficiency
  • What would you like to see happen in future projects?
  • New technologies

Finally, we'll wrap up with audience questions and insights. If you like, you can submit a question or topic in advance by email or with your Eventbrite registration.
